Clarity Under Pressure

Expert performance is the product of deliberate exposure to failure.

Gary KleinSeeing What Others Don't, 2013

In a status update where leadership wants certainty you do not have, discussion starts to feel like progress. It is motion without a boundary.

When the boundary is unwritten, people optimize for what is legible and defensible, not for what is true. That is how you get busywork and brittle systems. Write it for the person who inherits it later, because they will not have today’s context or today’s goodwill. Keep it calm, concrete, and small; the goal is a move you can repeat, not a speech you can admire.

Write the stop line now: what evidence ends the attempt, and what you will do when it appears. That is what makes execution calmer. Make the decision legible to the next person who inherits it.
